At The American College in Spain (ACS), we believe that education should extend far beyond the four walls of a classroom. As part of our ongoing commitment to social responsibility and environmental stewardship, we are proud to officially announce the launch of Project EcoGarden.

This initiative isn’t just about planting seeds; it’s about growing a mindset of sustainability and teaching our students how to lead the way in the global circular economy.

A Sustainable Partnership: ACS & Occidental Puerto Banús

Great things happen when local leaders collaborate. Thanks to a strategic partnership with Occidental Puerto Banús, ACS is transforming "waste" into a valuable resource.

We are collecting organic waste—specifically vegetable leftovers and coffee grounds—from the hotel and repurposing them on our Marbella campus. Instead of heading to a landfill, these materials are being used to create a thriving ecological garden and vegetable patch.

The Science of Composting: From Waste to Wealth

How do coffee grounds become a blooming garden? Our students are getting a hands-on look at the natural composting process. Project EcoGarden follows a scientific approach to soil health, involving:

  1. The Thermophilic Phase: Where high temperatures break down organic matter and eliminate pathogens.

  2. The Mesophilic Phase: Where the material cools and transforms into nutrient-rich, fertile soil.

By participating in this process, students witness firsthand how organic materials can be recycled to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote healthier local ecosystems.

The Three Pillars of Project EcoGarden

This project is built on three key objectives that align with the core values of The American College in Spain:

  • Environmental Education & Awareness: Teaching students the vital importance of protecting our planet through daily actions.

  • Circular Economy: Demonstrating a model where resources are reused and repurposed, minimizing environmental impact.

  • Reduction of Emissions: Implementing sustainable practices that lower our carbon footprint right here in Marbella.

Why "Learning by Doing" Matters

In a world facing unprecedented environmental challenges, theoretical knowledge isn't enough. Through Project EcoGarden, our students are "Learning by Doing." They are exploring how small actions—like recycling coffee grounds—can have a real, measurable impact on the environment.

This project is made possible thanks to the dedication of our partners, faculty, and the hard-working students who are turning our campus into a hub for sustainability.

Join Our Green Journey

Project EcoGarden is more than a garden; it is a symbol of our commitment to the local Marbella community and the future of our students. We invite you to follow our progress as we turn organic waste into a blooming example of what is possible when we work together for the planet.
