Preparing to Take the PERT Test
Students studying for the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) may be preparing to fulfill Florida's high school testing requirements or they may be taking the test prior to enrolling in college-level studies.
If you find yourself in one of these situations, take advantage of the following resources and study strategies to do well on this exam.
Tip 1: Access Reliable Study Materials
Before you take the PERT exam, you should ensure that you use quality study materials. There are several resources you can access to help you study effectively.
PERT Study Guide
The Florida Department of Education provides a PDF document that outlines all of the content areas on each of the three PERT tests. Reviewing this document is a good way to ensure that you know all of the skills that you will need to be able to demonstrate to do well on the PERT exam. The PDF also provides sample questions for each of the three PERT subtests that you can work through as part of your study process.
PERT Study Course
There are 101 self-paced lessons in this PERT: Practice & Study Guide Course. You can access the lesson materials when it's convenient for you, anywhere you have a smartphone and an internet connection. Once you complete them, you can be confident that you have reviewed all of the information you will be tested on.
This course also includes a PERT Final Exam that can be used to identify parts of the test that you need to spend more time studying.
Tip 2: Employ Good Study Habits
Study Regularly
Block out regular chunks of time and study consistently so that you can adjust your study schedule if you find you need to spend more time reviewing certain skills you're having difficulty with.
Be Accountable
Joining a study group, finding a study partner or asking someone to check on your study progress can all be ways to ensure that you remain motivated to study regularly. Working with a study group or partner offers the extra benefits of receiving insight from others about parts of the test you may be struggling with. If you prefer to study alone, you can still benefit from having someone who is assigned to check up on your progress and make sure that you aren't skipping study sessions.
Tip 3: Know What to Expect When Taking the Test
Take Your Time
It is important to understand that the PERT exam does not have a time restriction. Individuals can take as much or as little time as they need to complete the test. You should not feel rushed and should thoroughly process each question before answering.
The PERT is a computer-based test, and the system chooses questions based on whether you answered the previous ones correctly or incorrectly. You must answer each question, and changing answers isn't an option after you have moved on.
Understand the Question Format
All of the questions are presented in multiple-choice format, so the correct answer is presented for each question. If you are stuck you can use test answers to work backwards for math problems to see which answer fits in the equation. You can also mouth the answers to reading and writing questions to ensure that you carefully read the complete answer option.
